WINE/CHAMPAGNE

Made from fermented grape juice of white black grapes or white grapes, Wine has infinite possibilities of sweetness, acidity, tannin, alcohol, and aroma depending on a whole host of factors such as type of grape, the climate it is grown, the humidity during the period it was grown, the maturation process etc. Rightly hailed as the drink of the Gods, wine is so versatile and flexible that it ensures that there is a perfect wine for everyone.

RED WINE

Red wine is made by crushing black grapes and adding yeast to the mixture of grape skins and juice for fermentation. The red colour in red wine comes from mixing and fermenting the skin of the black grapes with the juice. Once fermented, the skins are drained off the red wine. The skins are then pressed to extract the remaining wine. This is then matured in oak casks or stainless-steel tanks and then bottled. Some of the best-selling varietals of red wine are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah / Shiraz.

WHITE WINE

Made from crushing white grapes and pressing the skins to extract all the juices, White wine is made by fermenting the juice (not the skin) in oak barrels or stainless-steel tanks. Once fermented, the white wine is also stored in wither oak barrels or stainless-steel tanks. Some of the best-known varietals of white wine include Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling

ROSÉ WINE

Made in a similar process to red wine where black grapes are crushed and fermented with yeast, Rosé wine or rose wine is drained from the skins within a few hours of fermentation where it has a beautiful pink hue. This is then matured in stainless-steel tanks (Oak is rarely used in the maturation of Rosé wines) and then bottled for consumption.

DESSERT WINE

Also known as fortified wines, dessert wines are made with extra alcohol for preservation. This additional alcohol also gives a distinct taste. Some to the best varietals of dessert wines are Sherry, Port, Tonic wine / Vermouth.

CHAMPAGNE / SPARKLING WINE

Also called bubbly or fizzy, sparkling wines has a fizz caused by carbon dioxide trapped in wine that is produced during fermentation. The carbon dioxide escapes as bubbles when the bottle is popped. Champagne is nothing but sparkling wine made in the region of Champagne in France. Some of the well-known varietals of sparkling wine are Champagne, Prosecco, Cava Brut.

Here’s an interesting fact about wine since you read through the whole thing! White wine can be made from black grapes too (not just white grapes). While it is conventionally assumed that white wine is made from white grapes and red wine is made from black grapes – this is not true. The main difference between white and red wine is that white wine is fermented without the skin whereas red wine is fermented with the skin. As majority of black grapes are red only on the outside while the pulp is pale coloured, black grapes when fermented without the skin can be used to make white wine. However, red wine can only be made from black grapes.
