RED WINE

Red wine is made by crushing black grapes and adding yeast to the mixture of grape skins and juice for fermentation. The red colour in red wine comes from mixing and fermenting the skin of the black grapes with the juice. Once fermented, the skins are drained off the red wine. The skins are then pressed to extract the remaining wine. This is then matured in oak casks or stainless-steel tanks and then bottled. Some of the best-selling varietals of red wine are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah / Shiraz

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

The Cabernet Sauvignon is a popular grape variety in the world grown in California, Australia, Chile, and South Africa. The grape produces dry medium and full bodies wines that are high in tannin and acidity. The wine has flavours and aroma of blackcurrant and black cherry with herbal notes such as mint and green bell pepper. Given that it is high in tannins (bitterness) and high in acidity, it is often blended with other grape varieties. Some of our best-selling Cabernet Sauvignon wines are Cono Sur Neblina Sauvignon Blanc, Obikwa Cabernet Sauvignon.

MERLOT

Merlot makes dry medium to full bodied wines that are medium in tannin and acidity widely grown in Chile and California. The wine has flavours ranging from red fruits (strawberries and plums) to black fruits (blackcurrant and black cherry) and is matured in oak giving aromas of vanilla. Some merlots in our portfolio include Jacob’s Creek Merlot, Sutter Home Merlot, Indaba Merlot etc.

PINOT NOIR

The main black grape of New Zealand, the Pinot Noir makes a dry and light bodied wine giving flavours of red fruits (strawberry, raspberries, and red cherry) with low tannins and high acidity. The wine is matured in oaks to give aromas of cloves and vanilla. Some of the best-selling Pinot Noir wines are Oyster Bay Pinot Noir, Sutter Home Pinot Noir, and Cono Sur Pinot Noir

SYRAH / SHIRAZ

The French call the grape Syrah while the Aussies call it Shiraz. Syrah / Shiraz produces a dry wine that are medium to full bodied typically giving flavours of black fruits (blackberry, black cherry) and hints of spices such as pepper or liquorice. The wine is matured in oaks which gives an aroma of vanilla and oak. The Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz, the La Boscana Silvestre, and Two Ocean Shiraz are some of the preferred shiraz wines.

RED BLEND

Red blend wines are made by blending one grape variety with another. For example, Cabernet Sauvignon is often blended with Merlot to reduce the acidity and tannin of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Some of the best red blends in our portfolio include Kumala Shiraz Mouvedre, Ducato Chianti DOCG, Abilius Tinto Red Wine.

Since you took the effort to read through this, we want to reward you with a fun fact! A 750ml bottle of wine contains the juice of approximately 600-800 grapes. A typical glass of red or white wine has about 150ml of wine (5 servings per 750ml bottle), which means that about 120-160 grapes sacrificed their lives for you to enjoy your glass of wine! It’s up to you to do justice – We are sure that you will.
